Gibraltar is a British dependent on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsular; a popular holiday destination in the region known affectionately as The Rock. It is a shopper's paradise, with tax-free shopping, and is usually visited by day-trippers with budget car rental staying on the Costa del Sol.

The obvious landmark of Gibraltar is the huge chunk of rock itself, which juts right up sentinel-like from the middle section of the territory. Although only 200m up, its solitary nature makes it all the more imposing. With car hire in Gibraltar you can drive to the top of the rock and take in the views. Beware of the scrounging Barbary monkeys when up there.

The caves under the rock are also a major attraction, including the cavernous St Michael's Cave. Concerts are staged in this cave in the summer. Gibraltar also has a lovely harbour at the Bay of Algeciras which is home to colonies of dolphins and can be toured by boat. Watergardens Quay has some good shopping.

In Gibraltar town centre still stands the old British fortifications while the Gibraltar Museum tells of The Rock's history. Main Street in Gibraltar town centre has the best shopping with designer labels and electronics galore. There are cafés, restaurants and bars to boot.

For those with cheap Gibraltar hire cars, a look at the southern part of Spain is a must. While nearby Algeciras doesn't have much going for it, the beautiful Costa del Sol lies just east of Gibraltar, where there are numerous beach resorts. The pretty coastal town of Cadiz is just north and is the gateway to the stunning Coto Donana National Park.
